Community Outreach programs are an integral part of policing in the educational environment. Educational intervention strategies are a proven avenue for school district police agencies to interact with the student, staff and parents. All programs offered are listed below and are divided into two areas, those programs designed for Students and programs for Adults. STUDENT COURSES911 EMERGENCY - Grades: K - 4 :: Length:1 hourCISD police officers, with the help of Red E. Fox, teach kids the basics in using 911. The children will learn when to call, how to call, and what to say when calling 911 for help in an emergency. G.R.A.S.P. - Grades: 5 and 6 :: Length:6 - 1 hour sessionsA series of six programs which can be used independently to address topics such as:
OFFICER FRIENDLY - Grade: K - 4 :: Length: 30 min - 1 hourThis program is designed to introduce the student to the Police Officer. The students and Police Officers interact with no pressure. The officer will talk with the students explaining what their job involves and their role in the school district. The children will have an opportunity to see a police car and talk about the officers equipment. BICYCLE RODEO - Grade: 1 - 6 :: Length: Depends on ParticipationKids use an actual bicycle bike-riding course to generate interest in bicycle safety and to provide bicyclist an opportunity to demonstrate their skills on a test course. The program length depends on the number of participants. GANG RECOGNITION - Grade: 3 - 12 :: Length: 1 hourThis program is designed to introduce the student to the danger of gangs and what to do if someone tries to get them to join a gang. This program uses positive peer pressure and teaches students how to make positive choices without feeling all alone. PERSONAL SAFETY - Grade: Junior High :: Length: 1 hourReviews of personal safety tips for students, including tips for travelers and ways to stay safe at school as well as away from school. BICYCLE SAFETY - Grade: K - 6 :: Length: 45 minutesStudents receive classroom instruction explaining traffic laws and bicycle safety rules, as well as proper maintenance of their bicycle. EDDIE EAGLE GUN SAFETY - Grade: Pre K :: Length: 1 hourThis program features Eddie Eagle and gun accident prevention. Eddie Eagle teaches children what to do and what not to do if they come in contact with a gun. STOP! Don't Touch. Leave the Area. Tell an Adult. GUN AWARENESS - Grade: 5 - 8 :: Length: 1 hourVideo shown: Big Shot - 20 minutes: Thrilling drama of two teenagers who borrow a gun in order to practice shooting at targets, as a devastating tragedy unfolds. This video will convince even the most jaded viewers of the need for action with regard to this critical issue. Video also lends itself to discussion of peer pressure, bullying, and personal responsibility. INTERNET SAFETY - Grade: 4 - 12 :: Length: 1 hourThis program is designed to give parents and students an overview of internet safety. Parents will be given resources to find healthy, positive web sites. Techniques on how to talk with their children openly and honestly about websites they may encounter that could make them feel uncomfortable. Discussion with students about rules of safety while surfing the web and interacting with others while on the internet. KID PRINT - Grade: Pre-K - 4 :: Length: Depends on ParticipationThis program offers parents fingerprint documentation of their child for their personal records. Each record card includes personal information about the child which may prove to be invaluable in helping parents and law enforcement agencies locate missing children. The program length depends on the number of participants. S.A.V.E. - Grade: 4 - 9 :: Length: 1 hour + 1 follow-upStop Alcohol Violations Early. Alcohol prevention program developed by the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC) to be used in schools. Teaches a student not only to avoid alcohol because it is illegal, but also teaches refusal skills dealing with peer and societal pressures. back to listDRUG AWARENESS - Grade: K - Jr. High :: Length: 1 hourOfficer presents information regarding drugs and the dangers of using them. K-9 unit will use a special drug dog to demonstrate how the animal can locate various types of drugs and guns. CONSEQUENCES - Grade: K - 12 :: Length: 45 min. per TopicConsequences is designed to offer students an inside advantage to making positive choices before they are confronted by difficult situations. It introduces them, in advance, to negative consequences which result from negative choices. Discussion topics will help students understand the consequences involved with their actions. Each topic is designed to be effective if used alone or in conjunction with the other topics in the series.
FATAL VISION - Grade: Jr./Sr. High :: Length: 1 hourProgram utilizes special goggles to allow students to realistically experience how senses are impaired by the use of alcohol and drugs, and the deadly results of their use. VICTIM AWARENESS - Grade: Jr./Sr. High :: Length: 1 hourThis program is designed to introduce students to terminology used in a criminal investigation. Illustrate how to become more aware of their surroundings, in order to reduce the probability of becoming a victim. Relates to students what information is useful if they should become a victim or witness to a crime. Finally, the program teaches students personal weapons they should possess to defend themselves. INHALANT ABUSE - Grade: K - 12 :: Length: 1 hourAn officer will explain the dangers of inhalants and the effects of the inhalants on the central nervous system. G.R.E.A.T. - Grade: 4 - 8 :: Length: 12 WeeksPolice officers interact with students in the classroom teaching them how to resist peer pressure and negative influences - replacing the negative with positive peer reassurance and constructive role model techniques. This is a 12 week program offered to 4th thru 8th grade students in their classroom one hour per week. TOBACCO EDUCATION - Grades: 5 - 12 :: Length: 30 minutesThis program offers an overview of the laws and consequences related to the use of tobacco by minors. Health issues related to tobacco use are covered by request. back to listYOUNG DRIVER - Grades: 9 - 12 :: Length: 3 hoursPolice officers will address issues faced by teen drivers and will instruct students on campus traffic regulations, the role of the campus police officer, prevention control officer, and administrators. Additional topics include: road rage and what to expect when stopped by a traffic officer or involved in an accident. PROJECT WILD - Grades: K - 12 :: Length: 6 hoursThis program is designed to assist all individuals in developing wildlife/environmental awareness and a personal commitment to protecting wildlife and the environment. Students will develop the skills and knowledge necessary to express responsible constructive behaviors concerning wildlife and the environment. ANGLER EDUCATION - Grades: 4 - 12 :: Length: 4 hoursJunior Anglers - (grades 4 - 12) will learn the basic skills of handling tackle and to identify a variety of fish. Several types of tackle will be introduced to the students; fishing rules and regulations will be learned; and aquatic systems will be reviewed. Master Anglers - (grades 6 - 12) will learn the characteristics and techniques for both fresh and saltwater fishing. Fish identification will be learned including both salt and fresh water species. Students will attain a greater proficiency in handling tackle and a broader understanding of aquatic environments. ADULT COURSESback to adult listGUN SAFETY - Adult :: Length: 1 hourProgram includes information on proper handling, storage and maintenance of firearms. DRUG AWARENESS - Adult :: Length: 1 hourProgram is designed to acquaint the public with various types of drugs, their use and effects. (includes visual aides) PERSONAL SAFETY - Adult :: Length:1 hourReviews of personal safety tips for adults, including tips for travelers, ways to stay safe at work as well as in public. INTERNET SAFETY - Adult ::Length: 1 hourThis program is designed to give parents and students an overview of internet safety. Parents will be given resources to find healthy, positive web sites. This program is a powerful tool and is somewhat graphic. Parents best share program with children at appropriate times. CRIME PREVENTION - Adult :: Length: 1 hourProgram reviews home safety and security issues including Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) GANG RECOGNITION - Adult :: Length: 1 hourProgram is designed for administrators, teachers, and public who wish to familiarize themselves with history, identifiers, and graffiti associated with area gang activity. PROJECT WILD - Adult :: Length: 6 hoursThis program is designed to assist all individuals in developing wildlife/environmental awareness and a personal commitment to protecting wildlife and the environment. Students will develop the skills and knowledge necessary to express responsible constructive behaviors concerning wildlife and the environment. |
